About Artist

CHIANG Han-Tung

Introduction
Born in 1926 in Changting, Fujian Province, Chiang Han-Tung moved to Taiwan in 1948 amid the relocation of the Nationalist government and graduated from the Art Department of Taipei Provincial Teachers College. In 1955, he studied under Li Chun-Shan and became a key figure in Taiwan’s modern art movement. His works were exhibited twice at the São Paulo Biennial in Brazil. In 1958, he co-founded the Modern Printmaking Association with Chin Sung, Chen Ting-Shih, Yang Ying-Feng, Li Hsi-Chi, and other artists. The association helped establish printmaking as an independent art form in Taiwan, earning him recognition as a pioneer of modern printmaking in Taiwan.

“I paint what I imagine, not what I see” lies at the heart of his artistic practice. For an artist who crossed the sea and lived far from his homeland, memory became his only homeland. He reinterpreted Hakka culture, traditional folk opera, and mythological tales, incorporating Cubism’s deconstruction of perspective, Surrealism’s dreamlike interplay between reality and illusion, and the direct, expressive lines of primitive art. Through this synthesis, he developed a distinctive style imbued with an Eastern spirit and rich, earthy tones.

In 1967, severe deterioration of his eyesight due to glaucoma led him to announce his retirement from the art world. With the support of his family, however, he eventually returned to painting, continuing to work with his face close to the canvas. His later works drew extensively on mythology, folk traditions, and memory. As his vision gradually faded, the images within his mind became ever clearer. His principal media included oil painting, woodcut printmaking, and marker drawing.

The Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Museum of Taiwan History have all held solo exhibitions of Chiang Han-Tung’s work. His works are held in the collections of institutions including the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Apollo Art Gallery.

Since 1983, Apollo Art Gallery has continuously promoted Chiang Han-Tung’s work. In 1992, the gallery facilitated a solo exhibition featuring more than twenty of his works at Austria’s National Museum of Ethnology (Museum für Völkerkunde).
