Spring Charm, Summer Grace - Wang Wen Solo Exhibition
Duration. 2024.04.03 - 09.30
Location. The One NanYuan (No. 32, Jiuxiong Lake, Xinpu, Hsinchu))
The artist Wang Wen's works often revolve around various living beings, particularly the vibrant and colorful peacock, which is related to her childhood experience at a kindergarten attached to a forest school. This kindergarten was integrated with nature and housed peacocks with colorful feathers, leaving her with vivid and shining memories from her childhood.
In the process of seeking self-expression, Wang Wen incorporated the peacock as a vehicle for her own image. From external perceptions and observations to internalization, she deconstructed and reassembled elements to form the primary imagery. Therefore, the ever-changing appearance of the peacock in her works metaphorically represents individuals. After breaking free from their physical appearances, they transform into beautiful self-images.
The creation involves the use of oil paint and lacquer (natural lacquer). Wang Wen breaks away from traditional techniques in her use of materials, returning to their essence before applying variations. Oil paint is layered and scraped, with each layer of color applied on top of a dried base color. Then, when partially dry, precise and sharp lines are scraped to reveal the underlying base color, creating different layers. This technique of depiction metaphorically reflects the ebb and flow of life. Lacquer, with its diverse textures and technical expressions, presents numerous challenges, including its ancient, sturdy, and environmentally friendly nature, making it highly attractive to Wang Wen.
