“Though a painting may be small, it can contain the whole world!” — YIM Mau-Kun

Born in Hunan, China, YIM Mau-Kun is celebrated for his mastery in portrait painting. His style reflects the precision and finesse of the Russian school of painting, with a rich foundation in realism and a gentle, refined palette. These qualities imbue his subjects with a soft and graceful temperament. YIM insists on painting his oil portraits from life, believing that face-to-face interaction allows him to capture the subject’s true likeness and inner spirit, which he brings vividly to the canvas.

YIM began painting small oil works after being admitted to the Affiliated High School of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. During that time, China was influenced by Soviet oil painting and European Impressionism. Initially, small oil landscape paintings served as a training method for color studies. However, as Chinese brush-and-ink techniques were integrated into the creative process, these small-format works gradually evolved into uniquely expressive pieces of art.

During the pandemic, when going outdoors to paint was no longer ideal, YIM began arranging still life compositions indoors using items such as flowers, fruit, ceramics, and metal vessels. These paintings were typically completed within three hours and kept deliberately small in size. In the early stages, he avoided overly detailed sketching and refrained from using oil additives, which kept the paint more vibrant and the strokes freer. This approach brought a sense of exploration and spontaneity to the work, echoing the true essence of oil painting: color and brushwork. It also provided a deliberate contrast to photo-realistic trends, instead celebrating oil painting’s rich color language, dynamic textures, and nuanced layers.

YIM Mau-Kun graduated in 1965 from the Stage Design program at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He moved to Hong Kong in 1980, and in 1987 held a solo portrait exhibition at Apollo Art Gallery in Taipei, which received widespread acclaim. The following year, he settled in Taipei. YIM has since held multiple solo exhibitions across Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong, and has been honored with numerous domestic and international painting awards.

This exhibition features a selection of oil landscapes, still lifes, and portraits by YIM Mau-Kun. We sincerely invite you to visit and experience the beauty of his work in person!
