At the 2024 Taipei International Art Fair, Apollo Art Gallery’s booth will revolve around the concept of a “Big Family,” blending members from nine different generations and cultural backgrounds. These artists, sometimes interacting with one another and sometimes standing apart, present a miniature world where multiple generations coexist with distinct expressions. The lineup includes seven artists from Taiwan, one from Germany, and one from Slovakia. Through diverse mediums, the works reflect self-awareness, cultural differences, and the faces of the times and generations. The materials used include oil paint, acrylic, natural lacquer, oil pastels, ink, fluorescent paint, and wood carving.
Han-Tung CHIANG (1929-2009), a pioneer of modern Taiwanese painting, serves as the “ancestor” of this big family. His works depict local folklore and traditional festivals, with delicate lines dividing human figures and architectural structures. Bold colors and vibrant compositions evoke a modern sense of folklore, leaving a lasting influence on future generations. Keng-I LIU (1938-) delivers tension-filled large-scale oil and pastel works, embodying his uncompromising response to reality. His pieces reflect his yearning for peace, love, and freedom, while also conveying sorrow and loneliness. YIM Mau-Kun (1942-), a realist painter and educator influenced by the Russian Repin School, displays masterful brushwork and vibrant realism. His portrait paintings, with their lifelike appearances and authentic emotions, serve as a model for many art learners. Bih-In DAI(1946-)studied and lived in Spain for years. After returning to Taiwan, he explored traditional papermaking, incorporating abstract expressionism into handmade paper to create unique textures that transcend conventional painting techniques. His work has drawn the admiration of ** Chiou-Yue HUANG (1965-)**, who also works in abstract expressionism. Huang's art bridges tradition and modernity, East and West, rationality and emotion, forming a distinctive personal style. Yu-Ju LIN (1985-), a new-generation artist in this family, uses the unique textures of lacquer art and skilled craftsmanship to depict both microscopic and macroscopic worlds. Chih-Cheng HUANG (1988-) employs cutting-edge AI technology to generate themes and compositions. He then skillfully applies metal foil and hand-paints on rice paper, creating distinctive flat works. Uwe Mertsch (1962-), the first foreign member of the family from Germany, embraces the philosophy of “simplicity is beauty.” His work includes Pop Art-inspired paintings and tactile wooden sculptures. The second foreign member, Gabriela Medvedova (1965-)from Slovakia, explores transparency, light, shape, material, and color. Through lines and colors, she captures the phenomenon of light in her compositions.
These nine artists, representing various generations and cultural backgrounds, use creative expression and diverse media to present *“Generational Manifestations”* at Apollo Gallery's booth.
