About Artist

Introduction
CHAO Fu-Le holds an MA in Contemporary Art Practice from Edinburgh College of Art in the UK, and painting is her primary medium. Since 2015 she has moved between London, Japan and cities in northern China, and this nomadic urban experience has become an important source for her work.

CHAO Fu-Le works mainly in acrylic on canvas. Her work considers how architectural masses and their surroundings shape one another, one advancing as the other recedes. Fragments of cities, from London’s postwar Brutalist council housing to Japan’s uniform and precise definition of space and the contradictions of constant demolition and construction in northern Chinese cities, are transformed in her paintings into geometric divisions, stacks and arrangements. Unlike the rational minimalism of function-driven design, her paintings emerge through an organic process guided by visual thinking. She deliberately avoids explicit narrative and traces of the first person, and her works are titled only by number, in the order they were made. In moving from the figurative to the abstract, she eliminates the marks of her tools and avoids building up paint wherever possible, using restrained gestures to create surfaces of almost mechanical smoothness.

In 2022 she held the solo exhibition Liberating Architecture, presented by Apollo Art Gallery in collaboration with The One Nanyuan, showing her recent research into architectural structure and visual space and its extensions.
