Introduction
HUANG Chih-Cheng was born in Miaoli, Taiwan, in 1988 and grew up in Kaohsiung. He received his MFA in the Creative Practice program at the Department of Fine Arts, Tunghai University, and has been working as a full-time artist since 2015.

Influenced by his training in ke cai (mineral-pigment painting) and ink painting, Huang often uses gold and silver leaf as a foundation, combining them with ink, cotton threads, photographic imagery, Korean jangji paper, and other mixed media. Metal leaf carries forward the East Asian tradition of incorporating metallic surfaces into interior spaces, while embodying both fragility and rigidity. These qualities reflect one of his central questions: How solid is the reality we construct in the contemporary world?

His works frequently return to the landscapes of childhood, drawing on family memories, old photographs, and everyday objects to explore personal and family histories, life and death, and desire. In response to Taiwan’s layered colonial history and its cultural landscape, repeatedly fractured and reconfigured under successive political regimes, Huang views identity not as something inherited intact, but as a continual process of assembling, questioning, and renegotiation. In his view, the boundaries between things are always ambiguous; those who have passed away can be encountered again through memory. Art thus becomes a means of creating subtle disruptions within the everyday.

Huang was selected for the Kaohsiung Awards in 2012 and 2014. In 2015, he received the top prize at the Tainan New Art Award. In 2016, he was selected by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture for the MIT—Made in Taiwan Young Artist Discovery program at Art Taipei. In 2020, he was selected for the Go To Taiwan Visual Arts Selection Program. In 2024, he was invited to present a solo exhibition at Yuyu Yang Museum, followed by exhibitions at Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and the National Human Rights Museum.

His works are held in the collections of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung Art Museum, Tainan Art Museum, Art Bank Taiwan, and Apollo Art Gallery. In 2026, during a six-month artist residency in France, Huang was invited to present a solo exhibition at Fragment Gallery in New York.

Apollo Art Gallery began closely following Huang’s artistic practice in 2015 and formally began collaborating with him in 2020 through the Go To Taiwan program. Since then, his works have been regularly featured in the gallery’s presentations at Art Taipei.
